Accuracy of environmental tracers and consequences for determining the Type Ia supernova magnitude step

چکیده

Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) are standardizable candles that allow us to measure the recent expansion rate of Universe. Due uncertainties in progenitor physics, potential astrophysical dependencies may bias cosmological measurements if not properly accounted for. The dependency intrinsic luminosity SNe with their host-galaxy environment is often used standardize and commonly parameterized as a step function. This functional form implicitly assumes two-populations Ia. In literature, multiple environmental indicators have been considered, finding different, sometimes incompatible, function amplitudes. We compare these context model, based on ability distinguish two populations. show local H α -based specific star formation (lsSFR) global stellar mass better tracers than, for instance, host galaxy morphology. tracer accuracy can explain discrepancy between observed amplitudes found literature. Using lsSFR or identify populations all other observations, though favoured. As strongly connected age, our results favour prompt delayed population model. any case, there exists differ standardized magnitude by at least 0.121 ± 0.010 mag.

The Type Ia Supernova

We present the rst measurement of the rate of Type Ia super-novae at high redshift. The result is derived using a large subset of data from the Supernova Cosmology Project as described in more detail at this meeting by Perlmutter et al. (1996). We present our methods for estimating the numbers of galaxies and the number of solar luminosities to which the survey is sensitive, the supernova detec...

The Type Ia Supernova Rate

We explore the idea that the Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) rate is made up of two components: a prompt piece that is proportional to the star formation rate (SFR) and an extended piece that is proportional to the total stellar mass. We fit the parameters of this model to the local observations of Mannucci and collaborators and then study its impact on three important problems. On cosmic scales, t...

Analysis of the Type Ia Supernova Sn1994d

On Mar. 7, 1994, Treffers, Filippenko and Van Dyk (1994) discovered the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 1994D in the SO galaxy NGC 4526, a member of the Virgo cluster which was was about 12 days before maximum light. Subsequently, both the light curve in Johnson’s UBVRI colors and spectra a have been monitored by several groups (e.g. Filippenko et al. private communication, Smith et al., 1995) making...

Type Ia Supernova Light Curves

The diversity of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) photometry is explored using a grid of 130 one-dimensional models. It is shown that the observable properties of SNe Ia resulting from Chandrasekhar-mass explosions are chiefly determined by their final composition and some measure of “mixing” in the explosion. A grid of final compositions is explored including essentially all combinations of Ni, stabl...
